Thank you, partner @bibliolifestyle + @marinerbooks for sending me a copy of A Great Country by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. This one had me captivated from page one and never let go.

What is the American Dream? How do we define success?

The Shah family came from India, to CA, so Ashok could attend college with just their suitcases, a new marriage and so many dreams. With a lot of hard work, twenty years later they succeeded in giving their three children a beautiful home in a gated community with ocean views in Southern CA. Everything was going according to plan until one night they get a phone call that their twelve year old son has been arrested and is in jail. But, this can’t be right! He’s just a little boy who spends his free time in the robotics lab at school!

“He’s at such a tender age, your brother,” “Losing his innocence. Seeing the ugliness in the world. But, he’ll get through it. You all will.”

With fast moving chapters, the author explores racial biases, class divides, community, culture, privilege, and immigration. We see the prospective of the story from the parents who have the mindset to keep their heads down and stay unnoticed and then the teenage daughter who is becoming more of an activist because what she sees happening in the world doesn’t sit right with her.

This one is full of things to discuss and would make a great book club pick!

I think it’s best to leave to off for now and just say you should read this book. This all you really need; it’s going to have you from the get-go and never let up!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Initially I was going to be lazy and just rate this 4.5, figuring it was too short (240 pages) or maybe it was missing something. However, I can’t stop thinking about it so it deserves all the stars! Books that stay on my mind get that nudge. Read it!
