My friend, @readingismydestiny and I were briefly chatting last night how this was such a great book that fell under the radar. Hopefully now with is new cover and accolades from Oprah is will get the recognition it deserves!
Stunning. Heavy. Deeply Moving.
The comp to The House on Mango Street is spot on!
Character driven, but I didn’t mind at all because I loved these characters so much. This says a lot of this author’s talent because this story is told from the POV of a 12 year old girl. I love a coming-of-age story!
For me, this was the type of book that teaches empathy and a glimpse of a world much different than my own. It would make an excellent book club selection to discuss!
Elevator Pitch: This haunting and lyrical novel captures the fault lines of an existence marked by economic insecurity, exploring what it means to come of age during a moment of displacement. Beautiful, evocative, and emotionally charged, Amanda Rizkalla’s Hungered is an indelible ode to survival, memory, and the search for home in its many forms.
