Title: The Guest
Author: B.A. Paris
Publisher: St. Martin’s Press
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Happy Pub Day to The Guest by B.A. Paris! Thank you to @macmillan.audio for the listening copy narrated by Emily Joyce. Her narration kept me captivated; I listened to this on Saturday afternoon while journaling and doing chores. I was simply engrossed. Which I will say is a little conflicting and maybe a nudge in the favor of doing the audio for this one because I felt like nothing really happens for the first 50% of the book.
The set up of this is full of mundane day to day details and painting a picture that our main characters, Iris and Gabriel are annoyed by their houseguest and friend, Laure, from Paris. Laure came to stay with them because she found out her husband, Pierre, had a child with another woman at the beginning of their marriage. Add to that Gabriel is dealing with being the last person to see a teenage boy fall off a nearby quarry in the village and die. Then there is a new couple who moves to town; plus what about the gardener? The author lays out a lot of unnecessary details, accidents, secrets, characters and it will make your head spin a little. I enjoyed the second half of the book a lot more and while I found the epilogue incredible I was also slightly annoyed everything was just sort of revealed this way. No doubt this author can write and entertain 3.5 ⭐️
