Before I get into my review it must be said (if you haven’t already heard) Wish You Were Here is a book that is very much about the year 2020 and C0vid. You may be thinking, “No! Absolutely, not. I can’t read that. I don’t want to. I’m not ready too.” You know yourself best, of course, but I encourage you to give this one a shot. I also encourage you to also read it until you get to part 2 if you are finding the the first half slow! That’s all I’m saying. I do not want to give anything away!
📚 Book Club REVIEW 📚
Title: Wish You Were Here
Author: Jodi Picoult
Publisher: Ballantine Books
Genre: Fiction
“The only way you can tell how far you’ve come is to know where you started.”
Diana is a planner. And her life is right on track. She will be married by 30, have kids by 35, move out of NYC to the suburbs, and continue to climb the professional ladder in her profession - the art auction world. Sounds pretty perfect, right? She just needs to get engaged. But…she’s pretty sure her boyfriend, Finn, a surgical resident, is going to propose on their upcoming romantic getaway to the Galapagos.
But, then a virus that felt worlds away appears in the city and it’s all hands on deck at the hospital that Finn works at. Finn encourages Diana to still go on vacation. It would be a shame for their non-refundable vacation to go to waste. So, very reluctantly she goes.
Almost immediately Diana’s dream vacation goes off the rails. Her luggage is lost, she is without wi-fi to reach Finn, her hotel is shut down, and the whole island is under quarantine. Diana is stranded. Diana is isolated. Diana is outside of her comfort zone.
But when life gives you lemons…make lemonade! Diana ends up befriending a teenage girl and her father which makes things a little more bearable.
Rating: Diana like many of us during isolation of C0vid found herself examining her relationships, her choices, and herself. I can’t recommend this book enough. I recommend reading it with a buddy or book club because you are going to want to discuss it!!!
