You know it’s finally summer when a new Kristy Woodson Harvey book is out! And I personally think this one may be her best book yet! Doesn’t the cover scream summer!? Thank you to @bookclubfavorites @simonandschuster for the #gifted early copy.
Told in a dual POV + dual timeline, which is my absolute favorite story telling. Add in a journal, secrets, a mystery, and a smidge of romance and you have a recipe for success.
Kristy wrote such rich characters that you are going to love and root for. And, this dog lover loves that she added her dog Salt to the book. When authors add children to the storyline it can be hit or miss, but Anderson added so much humor and charm. He was adorable!
Workaholic Keaton loses her job when her boss decides to reunite and have a baby with Keaton’s ex-boyfiend. It’s really complicated because she is still living with him until she finds a place again. AND Keaton found out they got back together while she was still dating her ex-boyfriend! Eeek! Without a lot of options considering the cost of NYC real estate, Keaton takes up her mom and uncle’s offer of going to Beaufort, NC to fix up the family property they inherited when their parents passed away. It hasn’t been touched in decades!
We hear from Keaton in the present day as she works on the house to have it ready for the historic home tours and sale. Helping her along the way, are the ‘Deckhouse Dames’ a hilarious coffee group who were friends with her grandmother and her neighbor, single dad Bowen and his son Anderson.
In a 1970s timeline we hear from Becks, Keaton’s grandmother. We learn all about her epic summer party planning, her fallout with her parents and what could’ve of happened to her and her husband Townsend. Because nobody really believes they died in a car crash into the water. Their bodies were never found…
Southern Charm. Love. Grief. Healing. Small Town Beach Community. I loved the message that we get to decide the definition of our own happiness.
“Some people cast a bright light while others stand in the shadows. If I had to stand in the shadows so that you could shine, well, so be it.”
