{Thank you @prhaudio for the gifted audiobook copy. It’s narrated by Gisela Chipe who not only had this story leaping off the pages, but made me feel like I was right in Brazil where this story takes place!}
Did you know @jennahbush started a publishing company this past year? @thousandvoicesmedia publishes one title a month under @peguinrandomhouse and friends, they have been knocking it out of the park! Their motto is “One story inspires a hundred conversations that inspire a thousand voices” which I absolutely love.
I haven’t had a book evoke such emotions while I was reading it since—The Girl with the Loading Voice by Abi Dare.
What to expect:
-Debut
-1970s Brazil
-Twin Sisters
(With main character Delores having to come to terms with being separated from her disabled sister, Mita, who is hospitalized.)
-Coming of Age; Dolores has to learn how to be a single when she has always been a double, how to navigated a British school, learning to read & write
-Character Driven
-Heartbreaking, but beautiful
I absolutely loved this sisterly relationship. This book really shows how different people cope with things based on their age and experiences. Dolores lost having her sister—her best friend—in her day to day life, something she couldn’t fathom, but her parent’s were the ones that had to make this difficult decision and children often lack the age wisdom & experience to see that—Well portrayed.
It was interesting to learn a little bit about Brazil in the 1970s. The jobs, markets, schools, the game liar’s dice . . .
I’m eager to read whatever Juliet Faithfull writes next. Put this one on your TBR IMMEDIATELY!
