🎧 Audiobook Review // #fivestarfriday 🎧
Thank you @prhaudio for the listening copy; Beth Hicks is the narrator and she made this feel like a full on listening production. I devoured this one in less than 24 hours thanks to recommendations from @thebookclubmom and @reading.is.your.destiny
Thought Provoking. Tragic. Second Chances.
Love. Marriage. Friendship. Family.
Is love enough to overlook someone’s unthinkable past?
CW: Postpartum Psychosis
That’s all I’m going to give away because going into this without preconceived notions and also going in blind really worked for me.
The beginning of the story really sucks you in. We meet the main character, Claire, ten years after fleeing her hometown of Rehoboth Beach, DE (Hi @joellawriting + @browseaboutbooks you’re mentioned a few time!) She moves to Wisconsin because she liked the shape of the state on a map, where she takes up running + art as a hobby to navigate her new life. Claire keeps to herself until one day she meets Erik at the gym and says yes to going out for custard after a workout (so Midwest!) This is the first time she lets someone other than her mother into her life in a long time. She clicks with Erik and starts sharing things about herself again. After a few dates, you quickly see Claire is hiding a big secret. Claire’s internal monologue is so good, especially listening on audio.
Erik is a theater nerd with two kids and a type A ex wife, Annabelle. Claire quickly finds herself in their orbit. But when Claire’s past starts slipping out little by little, well you’re just going to have to read! Trust me!
Rating/Thoughts: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really appreciated the mental health and nuerodivergent rep and a look at life after trauma for various roles in it. I liked the bond between Claire and her mother. This story overall really had fantastic and realistic characters. I love found family and second chances. Forgiveness is a really hard thing and boy was it emotional to be a fly on the wall in this story. This is one I won’t soon forget; it’s one you’ll think about even after you close the last page.
