Title: June in the Garden
Author: Eleanor Wilde
Publisher: Crown Publishing
Genre: Literary Fiction
A long overdue #fivestarfavorite! I listened to the #audiobook of this in June (Thank you @prhaaudio #gifted) and absolutely loved it! I immediately went to @pangobooks to snag a copy of it for my shelves!
Quirky. Emotional. Deeply Reflective. Compassionate. Healing.
Goodness is June is a character I haven’t forgotten. She has my whole heart! She gave me vibes of Eleanor Oliphant, another character I loved many years ago. Though, the author never really says for sure, this reader came to the conclusion that June was likely a neurodivergent character. Seeing the world through her perspective felt like such a gift. (Something I’m familiar having a child with Autism.)
Despite this being a slow burn, and very character driven—this book had my undivided attention. It was such a unique story on grief and moving forward, that I truly didn’t know what was going to happen!
I was listening to this book while I was on a busy cruise ship and I loved having this story to turn to when I need some quiet time.
—Book Summary—
After her mother's unexpected death, June must vacate her home. But when the social worker urges her to move into a flat with no garden—clearly, that won’t work. With no other options, she embarks on her first solo trip in search of a father she’s only seen in a single old photograph.
When June unexpectedly shows up at her father’s door, he panics and turns her away, unwilling to jeopardize his idyllic life and new family. On her way out, June spies an unruly backyard and with nowhere else to go, quietly moves into her father’s yellow garden shed. Once again, she can spend her days surrounded by her beloved flowers. But when her father’s 12-year-old son—her half-brother—discovers June, she must choose between being seen for the first time or running away yet again.
As an added bonus, I loved that June was a horticulturalist and all the talk of gardening in this book! A perfect book for the summer, but truly anytime when you are craving a little sunshine! OUT NOW! MUST READ!
