Crow Mary - Book Review

📚Book Review 📚

Title: Crow Mary

Author: Kathleen Grissom

Publisher: Atria Books

Genre: Historical Fiction

Thank you @bookclubfavorites for gifting me this copy awhile back. I feel incredibly guilty it took me so long to read it. But, I hope my review will inspire a new crop of readers to pick this one up! And if it’s on your shelf like it was for me, this is your sign to pick it up and read it. I promise you won’t regret it. I just did a #buddyread with the @thebookclubmom and I think everyone in the group gave it 5 ⭐️’s!

First of all, I love that this book opened up with a letter from the great-great granddaughter of Crow Mary. The author not only sought out the distant relatives for their blessing on this story, but also had many sensitivity readers to make sure she was getting the Native culture correct, especially the Crow that was much of the book.

There is only one way to describe Crow Mary and pardon my language, but she was a Badass! An 18th century warrior who had strong convictions and quite simply cared deeply about people. I was hooked from page one when she was a young girl named Goes First and excelling and learning so much in her tribe. After suffering a great loss, she decides to leave her tribe at sixteen to marry a white fur trader. When Indian women got married with a legal officiant it was common for their names to be changed and something simple like Mary was often chosen.

Part adventure, part love story, and a lot heartbreak; Crow Mary simultaneously moves at a quiet pace with a quiet voice while also having a cinematic feel. I could see this book as a movie! But then, we know the book would always be better.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was my first five star book of the year! I was starting to get nervous I was going to go the whole month of January without one! This type of book is exactly why I love historical fiction so much. I love learning about history through reading! I highly recommend this one!
