▪️The First Time I Saw Him by Laura Dave - OUT 1/6 - Thank you @simon.audio for the gifted listening copy. It’s a multi narrated by Rebecca Lowman, Tessa Albertson, Colin Donnell, and CJ Wilson. They all execute the tension and paranoia of this story brilliantly! The First Time I Saw Him is a perfect example when two things can be true at once. Was this book well written and entertaining? Yes. Did I necessarily think that the first book—The Last Thing He Told Me—needed a sequel? Not really. It actually took me a moment to settle into this story and remember the first book. Short. Binegable. And a nice wrap up for the Hall family.
▪️The Storm by Rachel Hawkins - OUT 1/6 - Thank you @macmillan.audio for the gifted listening copy. This is another full cast audio narrated by Alex Knox, Cathi Colas, Dan Bittner, Jane Oppenheimer, Patti Murin, Petrea Burchard, and Stephanie Nemeth-Parker. They all were equally entertaining in what I would call a ‘popcorn thriller’. Full of suspense and very atmospheric, The Storm, uses deadly hurricanes, an old historic hotel known for surviving them, and the character Lo Bailey—famously accused of murdering her lover—to have the reader engaged and not sure who or what to believe! This one is full of secrets both in the past and present and I throughly enjoyed it.
▪️Anatomy of an Alibi by Ashley - OUT 1/13 - Another full cast audiobook I listened to thanks to my friends at @prhaudio. When Saskia Maarleveld narrates something…I’m all in! She was joined by MacLeod Andrews, Amanda Stribling and Dan Bitter. While it took me a bit to warm up to this story (it’s a slow burn!) I loved all the narration. The title of this book is very important. Because at the end of the day that’s what it does…it examines the structure or anatomy of an alibi. Swapping lives. Spying. A murder. Being one step ahead with the only available alibi. I thought the ending was worth it, but it’s a slow burn to get there.
I hope you enjoy these mini reviews for these upcoming January books. I find less is more when reviewing thrillers to not give too much away.
