{Thank you @prhaudio for the gifted listening copy of The Shock of Light by debut author Lori Inglis Hall. It is narrated by Susie Riddell who will have you feeling all the emotions of this story! Out today 3/17!}
We had tons of storms on the east coast yesterday, which had me hungering down and reading all day. I picked up this book thanks to the recommendation by my friend @suethebookie. Sue has the best recommendations and our tastes tend to align. I was over due for a good Historical Fiction and this one delivered.
I went into this book fairly blind since a friend recommended it. This made it easy for me to be invested into a four part story and just let it unfold. Normally I would have preferred a dual timeline or POV, but this one worked. It builds up the love, bravery, and heartfelt emotions part by part. The only thing missing in this story—for me— is an epilogue. I wanted more!!! I loved brother and sister/twins bond this story portrayed.
It’s comped to The Nightingale, In Memoriam, and The Postcard if that helps to peek your interest further!
⬇️ BOOK SUMMARY ⬇️
Twins Tessa and Theo are roots of the same tree, in tune with one another’s every thought and desire. As World War II takes hold across Europe, both are eager to do their part. Theo is recruited by the RAF and disappears into the skies, while Tessa jumps at the chance to join the Special Operations Executive, devoted to spying and sabotage behind enemy lines.
Two years later, Theo comes home. Tessa does not.
Theo, wounded, broken by the loss of his fellows and disappearance of his sister, is indefatigable, angry, and driven.
Decades later, PhD candidate Edie is deep into her research on the Special Operations Executive during the war. When she finds Theo in London, they form an unlikely partnership, and together they will try to uncover the truth about Theo’s beloved sister—and the one secret she never told him…
