Title: What Kind of Paradise

Author: Janelle Brown

Publisher: Random House

Genre: Literary Mystery

Happy Pub Day - 6/3

{Thank you @prhaudio for the #gifted audiobook of What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown. Most of the audiobook is narrated by Helen Laser (A FAV!) with a few parts done by Peter Ganim. When an audiobook is performance is knocked out of the park, I stay up too late listening. And that was definitely the case!}

Author Janelle Brown writes so effortlessly. There is a way about her writing that just hooks you in. Her books feel like their own genre. Not really thrillers. Literary writing. Mysterious. Dramatic.

“What does it mean to survive, when you’re not quite sure what you’re living for?”

I kind of went into this one blind, as I tend to do with a lot of books. I skimmed the synopsis, saw isolated Montana cabin, 90s time period, and was sold! This is where the book starts. And you’ll immediately be hooked and have more questions than answers. Why do Jane and her father live off the grid in a remote cabin in MT? Something isn’t right…

“The line between hope and delusion can be awful narrow.”

Then parts 2 & 3 take place in the Silicon Valley and the up and coming tech world of the 90s. Some shocking things happen and a few pieces start to come together. But, I still had more questions than answers. This book is plotted so well and I didn’t find it predictable, at all. I was along for the ride!

I will say, it’s a very much a slow burn story and feels very coming-of-age. It’s full of philosophy and has a true crime feel to it. Jane lived such isolated life until she was seventeen that she felt like Bambi learning how to walk for the first time. It was funny at times, but mostly shocking how little she knew about things in the real world.

“Joy is always sweetest when loss lurks just below it.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 - I recommend this one!
